Security in 60 Seconds: Vulnerability Prioritization with Dependabot
Carlin Cherry presents three practical questions teams can use to decide which Dependabot alerts to address first, connecting vulnerability reports with how an application uses and exposes its dependencies.
Prioritizing alerts with application context
A scanner can identify a package with a known CVE, but when teams face hundreds of alerts, severity alone does not always show which vulnerabilities matter most to their application.
The short outlines three additional questions:
- Is the dependency actually used? Check whether the application uses the affected dependency.
- Can the application reach the vulnerable code? Consider whether application code can reach the affected functionality.
- Is the vulnerable code exposed in a production path? Account for production context when deciding remediation priorities.
Dependabot’s reachability analysis and production context help teams answer these questions. Cherry presents them as starting points to use alongside severity and EPSS, rather than as a replacement for those signals. Teams should choose the combination of signals that fits their needs.
